Welcome to our second summer newsletter. Although our next newsletter was not due until the autumn we are sending this special edition to celebrate the advent of the 600th anniversary of the proclamation of Owain Glyndwr's as Prince of Wales on September 16th. 1400.
Owain Glyndwr's Grave
Research by the society's Search Working Party (and in particular to the diligent work of Tony Carter) continues apace. John Scudamore (a descendant of Owain Glyndwr ) of Kentchurch Court in the Golden Valley in Herefordshire has informed the society that it is the family's belief, handed down in his family through the generations, that Owain's remains lie at Monnington Court near Vowchurch (some 8 miles from Kentchurch Court). You will find an interesting report in Chris Barber's book In Search of Owain Glyndwr (ISBN 1-872730-07-8) of his research into the location of the grave (pp 159-162, 211).
The Cardiff-based firm Terradat (UK) Ltd. undertook a geophysical survey of the motto near Monnington Court in July. They used three different geophysical techniques in their survey. Their investigations suggested the presence of the foundations of a rectangular building measuring 12 metres by 6 metres with a North-South orientation. There was no direct evidence of a burial at the site-although, over the centuries, such a feature could have been made undetectable to the instruments by earth movements. These findings have suggested that further, more detailed, investigations at this site could be productive.
Monument
We are now looking forward to the unveiling of the monument to Owain on September 16th. 2000 on the sexcentennary of the start of his campaign. Work on the 14 ft. slate monolith is nearing completion. The slate was very generously donated by McAlpine Slate Ltd. from the Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda. Ieuan Rees, the sculptor, has attracted commissions from as far afield as America and Australia. Four of his works are to be found in Westminster Abbey.
The unveiling will take place in the grounds of Y Plas (Celtica) between 2.30 and 3.30 p.m. Members will be travelling great distances to attend the unveiling and we hope that as many members as possible will be able to attend. A Mediaeval Fair will be held in Machynlleth on the day and battle re-enactments will take place in the grounds of Y Plas throughout the day. It should prove to be an inspiring and entertaining day.
The Appeal
First, our thanks to those members who have contributed to the Memorial Fund. Thanks to your contributions and the generosity of others we are now close to achieving our target for the memorial. Two of our members, Sybil Davies and Olwen Roberts, have been involved in a range of fund-raising activities which have raised substantial sums of money for the appeal.
We are very grateful to the members who have been very generous in their support for our appeal. For those who have not contributed, this is your last opportunity to send a donation. Please use the reply slip overleaf.
Officers
The society will soon reach its fourth anniversary and we expect to complete one of our aims with the unveiling of the monument. Now is the time to consider a change of officers to lead the society on to the achievement of its other aims. -please ensure that you have their consent for the nomination - please pass on the details to Jill Davies, 'Erw Hir', Llanarthne, Carmarthen SA32 8JD (01558 668564) Email :jilldavs@owain-glyndwr-soc.org.uk
